MUMBAI: After a sweltering spell that lasted a week, the mercury fell once again on Friday. From a minimum of 23.2 degree Celsius a day ago, the temperature dropped to 17.6 degrees in Santa Cruz. A drop of around 2 degrees was also recorded in the maximum temperature. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said clear skies have once again triggered the drop and the coolness should only increase in the coming days.

On Friday, minimum temperature at Colaba fell from 25.2 degrees to 22.4 degrees. Maximum temperature in the city, too, fell from 35 degrees in Colaba to 32 degrees, and from 35.8 degrees to 33.5 degrees in Santa Cruz. IMD officials said maximum temperature was still high and Mumbaikars continue to feel the heat. Evenings and mornings, though, are likely to get cooler in December.
"Sudden cloud cover over the city had caused temperatures to rise and even created a haze around the city. Since the skies are now clear, the chill is expected to intensify," an IMD official said.
Officials further said once northern parts of the country become cooler, winds coming into Mumbai will lead to a sustained drop in temperature.
"That is when we can say that winter has arrived. For now, it's only a fluctuation in temperature," he added.
